The Decagon EC-5 Soil Moisture Sensor is a low-cost capacitance probe that measures the dielectric permittivity of the different soil types across a wide range of temperatures and salinities. Since the dielectric permittivity of soil is related to water content, the soil’s moisture can be inferred from the voltage reading of the instrument. The accuracy of soil moisture is typically within three percent, depending on the calibration of the instrument, and readings can be taken every 10 milliseconds.
